Imagine the perfect version of your life where you had an abundance of every-thing you desired: you were filled with inner peace and lived a life of complete ease and bliss…
Your immediate reaction is probably “Yes, I want that!” although as you really consider that life, it might shock you to realize that once the novelty of endless vacations, an extravagant lifestyle and complete ease in every aspect of your life had worn off, you would soon get bored and start to look for new challenges or projects.
Setting goals has gotten a bad rap over time as many of us are saturated with the old paradigm of trying to create perfection and HOW we will achieve our goals, which focuses on stamina, willpower and seems like a lot of hard work, so we give up goal setting altogether and plod through and react to life, rather than consciously co-creating a life we actually believe is worth living.
Realistic goal setting is NOT about creating perfection, it is about consolidation of focus and effort for what we want to experience and should be an ongoing re-evaluation process throughout our lives. To effectively set goals, we have to look at the concept from two perspectives: Big picture and next step goals.
We are designed to grow through our experiences; acquiring new knowledge; becoming more aware; overcoming challenges and leaving a legacy behind us, so identify your “big picture for your life” goals by looking at JUST 3 aspects:
1. The overall experiences you want from life (e.g: success, love, travel, freedom, integrity, ease etc – list the values that are important to you and focus on the experiences themselves rather than how you believe you might experience them)
2. How you want to grow as a person (who would you like to be at the end of your life?)
3. What legacy do you want to leave behind (what would you like to be remembered for?)
Once you have an understanding of your big picture values, focus on your next step goals (usually in one area of your life), which are aligned to your big picture goals, just in bite size pieces – the journey rather than the destination, so to speak.
When you set goals according to your true mission or purpose in the present and then align your energetic vibration to them by taking inspired action and facing and overcoming any blocks, your goals will draw you to them almost effortlessly.
Top 5 questions to ask yourself when “next step” goal setting
- What experience do I desire next?
We all have the same purpose in life, which is to experience ourselves. Lets say you are an entrepreneur and want to experience financial freedom in your business, work backwards asking yourself how you could best achieve that and identify the steps you would need to take.
- What do I fear the most?
This helps you identify what is really holding you back and once you bring your fears into your awareness, you are halfway there. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and is truly lived in the dance between what you desire the most and what you fear the most. The trick is to make friends with fear and convert it into courage, giving you the momentum you need to take your inspired action steps.
- What is my greatest challenge?
Identify what obstacles you need to overcome. This may (and probably does) include your self-sabotage and procrastination patterns. Again, consider how you may overcome them and design a plan to work through them.
- Why have I not already achieved my goal?
This step takes complete honesty and it could be time to stop playing the blame game and take full responsibility for your life. With understanding, comes acceptance and the ability to breakthrough. For many people, a never ending “to do” list makes them feel like a failure every day, so rather focus on the items that matter the most and are aligned to your goals. You get what you measure!
- How will my goal affect others?
Regardless of whether your goals are work or personally related, they will affect those around you. The best performers are focused on outcomes and not activities. Authentic leaders share their passion for their goals, get buy-in and then, if relevant, empower others to work out the “how” rather than trying to control their activities.
Once you have achieved your “next step” goals and become comfortable with the results, you will find yourself becoming restless and new desires will start to emerge and the process will start all over again.
